Disabled People as Employers: New Formulations of ‘Work’ and the Socio-economic Benefits of Direct Payment Use project Direct Payments are changing the face of welfare provision to disabled people in the UK. The roll out of Direct Payments has made substantial changes to the way funding for support is delivered to disabled people. In situations where a disabled person employs Personal Assistants, their role changes overnight from benefit recipient to employer. The social implications of such a radical rethink of the delivery of welfare are still being considered in the UK. Issues such as the skills set required when becoming an employer are only just beginning to surface. This research project examines the welfare, policy and social benefits of Direct Payment use for the recipients, informal carers and UK society. [Outputs...]
