How do carers of people with long term neurological conditions experience the provision of replacement care? About 850,000 people in the UK care for someone with a long term neurological condition (LTNC) and many of them are unable to play a part in activities outside the home or take a much needed break without making arrangements for respite or replacement care in their absence. However, people with LTNC often have complex needs and temporary care of this kind can be hard to obtain. This may be because community carers are not trained to manage problems such as seizures or aggressive behaviour, because practical obstacles bar people with physical impairments from outside settings, or for social or geographical reasons. Currently little is known about the accessibility of replacement care services for people affected by different LTNC, or the relative costs and benefits of its provision.
