Support for carers with multiple caring roles: balancing the competing demands of caring for someone with a complex neurological condition alongside other family dependents project This project investigates the support needs of people who take on the role of informal carer to a family member with a complex neurological condition, whilst also being the main carer for other dependents within the family. It takes an inclusive approach by looking across a wide range of long-term neurological conditions and will aim to identify differences in support needs according to whether the person with the neurological condition has ‘hidden’ impairments (cognitive, behavioural emotional) or ‘visible’ impairments. The support needs of the family as a whole will be identified in a cross sectional survey and a sub-group will be followed longitudinally for a year post-diagnosis/onset of the condition to find out how needs change over time and how they can best be met.The overall objective is to develop a ‘good practice’ guide in provision of appropriate support to families, which will be disseminated through major service providers in the NHS and voluntary sector.
